coeliac disease

What is it?
Coeliac Disease is a life-long inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract. This is caused by gluten, a protein found in wheat, and similar proteins in rye, barley and oats. Coeliac disease used to be rare, but the average incidence in the United Kingdom is 1 in 100 people. It is also known that the condition runs in families.
In a Coeliac, gluten damages the lining of the small intestine which greatly reduces the ability of the gut to absorb adequate nutrients from food. Wasting can occur, leading to severe illness resembling malnutrition.

What is the treatment?
The only treatment necessary to return the intestine to normal is a strict gluten-free diet. This requires considerable discipline. Wheat is usually made into flour and any food such as ordinary bread, biscuits, cakes, pastries, puddings and pies made from flour will contain gluten.
Gluten is very difficult to avoid when eating away from home as it is in so many food products. There is a constant need to check with hotel or restaurants that the food is gluten-free and is prepared in a manner which avoids any contamination with gluten, as the proteins may be present on surfaces used for food preparation or cooking.

How can we help?
Toastabags have been found to be invaluable to Coeliacs when away from home.
By using Toastabags, Coeliacs can have the freedom to use their own gluten free bread in toasters provided in the dining rooms of most hotels, or to give to waiting staff to have prepared for them safe in the knowledge that their bread will be uncontaminated.
Likewise, visiting or staying with friends and relatives is made easier by being able to use toastabags in their host's kitchen, where toasted sandwiches and other snacks can be cooked in a Toastabag, thus eliminating cross contamination.

HOT TIP! Keep your toastabag in the toaster all the time and it will take care of the mess while saving you time - and more importantly stop the risk of cross-contamination with glutenenous food. The food will simply be contained in the toastabag!
